Ariana Grande confronts public scrutiny in gory music video for ‘Petal’

Ariana Grande released her eighth studio album, Petal, on July 31, alongside a horror-infused music video for the title track that tackles industry pressure, intrusive fan expectations, and media commentary. Co-written and executive produced alongside her longtime collaborator Ilya Salmanzadeh, Petal was issued through Republic Records in partnership with Grande’s imprint BabyDoll Music.

The ultra-violent cinematic clip, directed by frequent visual collaborator Christian Breslauer, stars Grande as an aspiring Hollywood performer named Pepper who reaches a breaking point during an audition for demanding studio executives. The visual transforms a routine Hollywood casting call into a bloody satire centered on the relentless public and corporate scrutiny aimed at female performers.

Inside the narrative, Grande’s character stands before a panel of unimpressed male evaluators who dismiss her performance. The judges write harsh critiques on her assessment form, noting ” lovely voice, very kind — but nothing special ” before stamping the document ” not good enough ” in bright red ink. After the executives claim she lacks charm, complain she has ” no sex appeal, ” and instruct her to leave and ” find ” her previous identity, Pepper returns to the studio armed with a chainsaw to dismember the panel.  The video closes on a surreal note as Pepper opens a fortune cookie bearing the message, ” You bloom wherever you are planted. ” A wide camera movement then reveals the entire bloody sequence took place on a Hollywood soundstage where Pepper was the lead actress all along.

The 12-track ‘Petal’ album also represents a stark departure from the theatrical pop aesthetics of Grande’s 2024 album ” eternal sunshine “. Speaking with Apple Music ahead of the release, Grande shared that the project channeled an ” unfiltered rage ” that she had previously hesitated to express in her songwriting. She noted, ” I usually am too shy to tap into that, ” before adding, ” This time, I didn’t. ”
